Reddit Round 2: A Single Post Earns Over 2000+ Karma
This article details how a Reddit newcomer can earn over 2000+ Karma with just one post, covering the preface, basic situation, post content, data analysis, and a summary of thoughts.
Following up on my previous article about how Reddit newcomers can quickly earn Karma, the response was quite positive, so today I'll continue to share an advanced Reddit strategy: how to earn over 2000+ Karma with just one post.
[Special Note]
-
The post I'm introducing today is actually a work from my beginner period. I've been posting content for less than a week, and at that time, my Karma was only 300+ with limited exposure, but it still achieved good results, so I'm sharing it with everyone today.
-
From another perspective, Reddit has a huge amount of traffic, and there are many opportunities for ordinary people to gain exposure, so don't give up on any opportunity to showcase yourself.
-
Reddit is a very fair community, extremely friendly to newcomers. Even if you have 0 followers, as long as your content is good enough, you can still get exposure. Later, I will share some data to let you feel the traffic on Reddit.
[Straight to the Results]
-
Currently, my Reddit account has accumulated 3291 Karma, with only about 10 posts in total. (See Figure 1)
-
Among them, there were a few small hits, with individual posts receiving 20 to 800 upvotes, converting to Karma of about 1000 in total. (See Figure 2)
-
However, a single post alone has received 2602 upvotes so far, which should have contributed more than 60% of the Karma, estimated at over 2000+ Karma. (See Figure 3)
-
This post directly earned me my first Reddit popular post badge (1000+ upvotes), as shown in Figure 4.
[High Upvote Post Analysis]
-
The post content is a video of a little parrot sleeping on its back on someone's thigh, with its little feet swaying, very cute. For a more intuitive feel: the post link is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/parrots/s/wquNFg812d
-
If you only post videos, it's actually hard to get high upvotes on Reddit, where there are many images and videos flying around, as it's difficult to stand out.
-
However, if you add some text with a sense of conflict and construct a contrasting scene, it will attract people to participate in commenting and sharing.
-
So I added a title to this video: "This guy is napping on my legs, and I am in a hurry to use the bathroom, should I wake him up?", creating a very interesting scene, and then it was time to let the bullets fly.
-
Foreigners love this cute scene, and with this conflicting and funny scene, in just two or three days, a large number of people commented below, and everyone was asking me: hold on, absolutely do not wake up the little parrot.
-
From the data perspective, as of now (48 hours after posting), 143K views, 2700+ upvotes, 93 comments. Reddit's traffic is really huge, so manage it well.
-
It's worth noting that the top comment on my post received 735 upvotes. He just left a comment, but it got huge exposure, which is the magic of Reddit. So, when you don't have content, go find high upvote posts, comment, interact, and get some traffic.
[Reflections and Conclusions]
-
Why is Reddit considered a fair and newcomer-friendly platform? This is inherently determined by its content distribution mechanism. Compare this with Twitter, where gaining exposure for your content largely depends on the number of followers you have. Without followers, you're often just talking to yourself on Twitter. However, Reddit is naturally designed around 'sub-communities' or subreddits. You only need to join the communities that interest you, and then you can post any content. These posts will be focused within that community and gain significant exposure, and if your content is good enough, it can gain even further exposure. So for newcomers, you don't need to chase followers, which is too difficult; you just need to choose the right community to post in, participate more in comments, and earn Karma.

Choosing the right community is crucial. I posted the same parrot video in two different communities, 'parrots' versus 'birbhostage'. Judging by their names, both are for posting about birds, but the traffic scale is not on the same level. It was only later that I discovered that the content I posted in birbhostage did not get as much exposure as in parrots. I then paid special attention to two key data indicators: members and online status, as shown in the comparison:
- 'parrots' has over 1 million members, with hundreds of people online at the same time every second,
- While birbhostage only has about 10,000 members, sometimes only a handful of people are online. So, the scale of users and the number of people online directly determine the ceiling. Choosing the right community can save you a lot of effort.
-
When posting content, deliberately train your internet sense. Videos and images are not scarce on today's social media. How to construct interesting scenarios based on these materials to widely resonate and spark discussion is a very impressive ability. On Reddit, resonance brings upvotes, and discussion brings comments. When we post content, we must put some thought into the copywriting. Good copywriting can scale the exposure of content. For example, today's post, if it were not for the conflict scenario between 'cute bird' and 'the owner in a hurry to use the bathroom' constructed in the copy, I guess this video would have likely been just another cute video among many.
-
In terms of content material, the few parrots at my home are far from enough. On the one hand, the scenes are very monotonous, and on the other hand, the quantity is limited. I joined some bird-keeping enthusiast communities to collect materials. When I see interesting videos or pictures, I redesign the scenario copy and then post it on Reddit. This ensures a continuous stream of content and guarantees quality.

While posting these Karma-earning bird videos, I also deliberately paid attention to some other smaller communities that highly match the tone of my products. I found that these smaller communities have a large user base, with tens of thousands or even millions of members. These communities are also very active, with many user questions and interactions, making them very suitable for content creation. So, friends, stay confident in working with Reddit; it's a treasure trove of traffic.
