How to Gain Over 300+ Karma on Reddit as a Newcomer
This article introduces a detailed process for Reddit newcomers to achieve 300+ Karma from scratch, including preliminary explanations, basic situations, a detailed three-day process from negative numbers to over 300, and a summary of valuable insights.
[Preface]
-
Reddit has 600 million active users, with a significant amount of traffic, making it an ideal platform for overseas products to spread content.
-
Reddit hosts numerous subreddits, with hundreds suitable for overseas products, but the majority do not allow direct posting.
-
Reddit has a Karma system to assess user value, and many subreddits require a certain amount of Karma to post.
-
For beginners, accumulating Karma is crucial as it determines whether you have the right to speak.
-
Reddit's official algorithm for Karma is not disclosed, but it can be seen from the WEB interface as being divided into Post Karma (posting points) and comment Karma (comment points). On mobile devices, these two values are combined, and the method of handling is simply by adding them together.
[Basic Situation]
-
My Reddit account was registered in 2022, but I have never posted any content, so my Karma has always been 0. Even my comment Karma is a negative number, yes, points can be negative, and I will explain later how this negative number came about.
-
Recently, some of my AI products are about to meet the public, so I started considering nurturing my Reddit account to prepare for future product marketing.
[From Negative to 300+ Karma in 3 Days]
-
I was inspired by a friend to quickly gain some Karma on Reddit by posting about birds in the 'parrot subreddit'. My friend had already tried it and achieved impressive results.
-
I happen to have a parrot at home, so I decided to give it a shot. My first attempt was a failure; my Karma dropped from 0 to -2. I posted a video of a puppy playing with a parrot, which I thought was adorable and would earn a lot of upvotes. However, within 5 minutes, a foreign user commented that I wasn't taking good care of the bird, suggesting the puppy might bite the parrot. As a result, I received two downvotes, and my Comment Karma plummeted to -2, as shown in Figure 1.
-
To prevent the video from causing further negative impact, I immediately deleted the post.
-
By the end of the first day, I decided to try again and posted two pictures of my parrot standing on my computer. My caption was: "This guy won't let me open my computer to work, what should I do?"
-
After a night's sleep, I was surprised to find that my Karma had risen to 96 after just 7 hours (Figure 2), while my comment Karma was still at -2, haha.
-
I felt like I was getting a sense of the internet. At this point, I hadn't noticed that this post had already generated 36 comments, nor did I know what these comments were for. I saw many interesting responses from foreigners, with one person saying: "Just call your boss and tell them you quit." I thought it was funny and jokingly replied, which immediately earned two upvotes (Figure 3). When I checked my Comment Karma again, it was no longer negative!
-
At this point, I roughly understood the logic. On Reddit, both posts and comments are important and can significantly boost Karma.
-
Encouraged by this, I posted another parrot-related thread, thinking the copy I paired with it was hilarious and should continue to earn a lot of upvotes. However, the reality was that I didn't get any.
-
I continued to adjust my strategy, only posting content featuring the parrot. The new post was of the parrot bringing me a pen, with the caption: "This guy insists I use a pen instead of a computer." The response was not as good as the first post but still garnered over 100 upvotes.
-
After three days, these posts cumulatively brought my Karma to 339, an incredible achievement!
[Summary of Key Points]
-
Reddit has a massive amount of traffic; a single post can easily achieve over 10,000 views, as shown in Figure 5. This community deserves attention and investment.
-
Both posts and comments are equally important. If you're unsure how to create a post at first, you can start by finding interesting content and leaving comments on them to earn Karma.
-
If your content generates comments from other users, be sure to reply to them. Your responses can further attract upvotes and convert into Karma.
-
Titles are crucial; use more question-based titles. This encourages users to answer your questions, generating comments. For example, my first post: "This guy won't let me turn on my computer to work, what should I do?" The comments below were all responses to my "what should I do?" question, and of course, they were all humorous.
-
There are many subreddits with low barriers to entry. Here are some low-barrier ones I've tried; just search for the keywords on Reddit:
- Cloud: For posting clouds, low barrier, any picture can be posted, and beautiful scenery is likely to get upvotes.
- Sky: For posting skies, for the same reason, beautiful scenery is likely to get upvotes.
- Dog: For posting about puppies, small animals are endearing.
- Parrots: For posting about parrots, small animals bring high Karma.
-
I have tested that Reddit's mobile app is exceptionally fast, with posts and comments being published in milliseconds. However, the web version (ARC browser) often fails to send successfully. It's recommended to use the mobile app more often for posting. At the same time, if we want to pay attention to detailed data analysis, we still need to view it on the WEB interface, as Figure 5 shows a detailed data analysis of a post.
